Schreiner, Doody to speak on patent reform at Laguna Niguel

A press release from Goodwin Procter announced:

Stephen T. Schreiner and Patrick A. Doody, partners at the law firm Goodwin Procter LLP, will speak at the 2007 Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association (LAIPLA) Spring Seminar on June 8 and 9 in Laguna Niguel, Calif. The conference features intellectual property experts including two United States Congressmen -- the Honorable Darrell Issa and the Honorable Dana Rohrabacher -- with discussion of the Patent Reform Act of 2007 as well as other issues pertaining to the quality and overall health of the U.S. patent system.

Both Schreiner and Doody will speak on the panel: "Do Not Fix That Which Is Not Broken In the U.S. Patent System." Schreiner will review how the proposed legislation includes a number of beneficial changes that will improve patent quality and reduce litigation abuse. He will also discuss changes to the patent system that, as proposed, may be harmful to the goals of enhanced patent quality and litigation reform use. For example, the proposed changes to the law of venue and willfulness will likely improve the patent system, whereas the proposals for a new open-ended post-grant review regime and a new framework for damages assessments will likely undermine the goals of patent reform.

Doody will examine whether patent law reform is needed to weed out "bad patents" that are symptomatic of a patent system that is broken and in need of radical adjustments. Rather Doody proposes if there is a problem, it is the filing of baseless patent lawsuits -- a practice that can be appropriately curbed through the judicial system.

Schreiner is a partner in the firm's Litigation Department and member of its IP Litigation Practice. He focuses on all aspects of IP law including patent litigation, patent prosecution, counseling and due diligence related to electronics, signal processing, software, ecommerce, business methods, digital television, telecommunications, interactive media, the Internet and other areas.

Doody is a partner in the firm's Litigation Department and member of its IP Litigation Practice. He primarily focuses on IP with particular emphasis on patent infringement litigation, client counseling, due diligence, licensing and transactional matters, patent prosecution and freedom to operate opinions.

The LAIPLA Spring Seminar will take place June 8 - 10 at the Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel, Calif. It is presented by The Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association, The San Diego Intellectual Property Law Association, The Orange County Patent Law Association, and the Ventura County Bar Association IP Section.
