Merck seeks to take Mevacor over-the-counter

Mevacor, known generically as lovastatin, lost patent protection in 2001. Selling an over-the-counter version could help Merck extend sales of the drug and also pave the way for a nonprescription version of the company's more widely used statin, Zocor. Zocor is sold without prescription in Britain.
