Innovations of the past: the horse collar

The horse collar is used to distribute load around a horse's neck and shoulders when pulling a device, such as a wagon or plow. The horse collar originated in China and migrated to Europe by about 900 AD. With the advent of the collar, horses, rather than oxen, did the important field work. This invention changed the way we live, and thus is properly termed an innovation.
