Peer-to-patent, preliminary boxscore

As of July 7, 2007, there are six patent applications up on peer-to-patent.

The most discussed at this point is Method, apparatus and computer program product for providing status of a process, first inventor James Schmid. There have been 49 discussion items and 11 pieces of prior art. The Schmid application is published application 20070135944 filed by Cantor Colborn. It seems to be an application of General Electric. The fifth named inventor is Danni David of Mumbai, India.

Claim 1 states:

An apparatus for providing a summary for at least one process of a system, the apparatus comprising: a block object for accepting input data descriptive of the at least one process and for grouping as a block at least one variable of the input data with at least one attribute for the variable; and a display client for reading the block and producing output to display the summary for the at least one process.

If you are wondering what a "block object" is, refer to paragraph 44, which states:

The block object 21 is a software component that provides a generic method for creating each block 26. Typically, each block 26 includes a selected set (i.e., a group) of at least one variable 3, as well as other relevant attributes. Once selected, each variable 3 is a member (i.e., tag) of the block 26. Each variable 3 is selected and then added to the block 26 by various techniques, such as, in non-limiting examples, manually by a user or as part of an original configuration of blocks 26 during initial configuration of the software component 10. Generally, blocks 26 are stored in block storage 16. Block storage 16 may include, in non-limiting examples, individual data files, a database and XML structures.

In terms of prior art,

Title DDD--Data Display Debugger
Description
Describes a long-existing UNIX tool for debugging processes - a display client that allows the user to select what to watch, displays them in boxes, allows the user to arrange as they wish, shows relationships.

got three "thumbs up".

Title Temperature and other data logging system usign MRTG/Nagios etc
Description
logs temperture (or other data), store the value and timestamp (block of data) displays it using various means (graph, indicated value, bar chart etc) PDF of review attached

got two "thumbs up".

One notes that the prior art is not exactly constructed in the format of a claim chart in peer to patent.

The second most discussed application is "User selectable management alert format," first inventor Paul Broyles, which is published application 20070118658, assigned to Hewlett-Packard. The first claim recites:

A computer system, comprising: a processor; a basic input/output system (BIOS) including logic instructions which, when executed by the processor, configure the processor to: initiate power on self test (POST) processing in the basic input/output system of a computing device; present one or more management alert formats in a user interface; receive a selection signal from the user interface identifying one of the management alert formats presented in the user interface; and configure a device coupled to the computing system with the identified management alert format.

The summary states:

In one embodiment a computer system, comprises a processor, a basic input/output system (BIOS) including logic instructions which, when executed by the processor, configure the processor to present, in a user interface, one or more devices coupled to a computer system and one or more management alert formats applicable to one or more devices, receive a selection signal from the user interface identifying one of the management alert formats presented in the user interface, and configure one or more devices coupled to the computing system with the identified management alert format.

IPBiz still says that all one need study to determine why such "peer review" does not work are the reviews of Carhart's book on amazon.com. Stupidity, not intelligence, can reign supreme in this format, and voting, if done by the uninformed, does not remedy the problem.
