Intellectual property in Idaho

from the Idaho Statesman:

The Technology Law Group is entering its fourth year of practice in Boise with a focus on helping Idaho high-tech companies recognize the importance of protecting IP before bringing a product to market.

Emile Loza, the firm's founder and self-described "geek lawyer," moved to Idaho from Washington, D.C., for the quality of life. She soon recognized that there wasn't a firm in the area that exclusively catered to the tech industry.

"I couldn't find a very receptive audience when it came to Idaho's larger firms," Loza said. "I remember being interviewed and offered a position and saying I wanted to do a technology practice. They literally looked at me like I had three heads."

Loza opted to start her own practice out of her home. A contract with a very large local tech firm gave her the start she needed.

Today, Loza's firm has 16 employees and provides services for both large and small companies. The firm also has broadened its focus beyond IP to include divisions that provide long-range business planning services for the tech industry.

"Every business has an exit strategy whether it be one year or 20 years," Brad Frazer said. "When companies look at an acquisition target, the value of that target is multiplied a hundred fold by the virtue of a well protected, well documented and nicely tied up IP portfolio."
