California's Proposition 64 took effect on 1 January 2017

Proposition 64 took effect in California on Jan. 1, 2017, allowing recreational use and limited growing of cannabis.

About 60 years earlier, the tv show "Highway Patrol" ran an episode titled "Resident Officer," wherein a highway patrol officer, on discovering a planting of marijuana, was shot in the back by the growers. The episode ended with the lines
of Broderick Crawford:

Innocent of murder? Innocent of marijuana traffic? How do you sleep at night?
