An engineered microorganism, wherein said engineered microorganism comprises one or more recombinant nucleic acid sequences encoding one or more enzymes having enzyme activities which catalyze the production of alkanes, wherein the enzyme activities comprise an alkane deformylative monooxygenase activity and a thioesterase activity, a carboxylic acid reductase activity, and a phosphopanthetheinyl transferase activity; or a thioesterase activity, a long-chain fatty acid CoA-ligase activity, and a long-chain acyl-CoA reductase activity.
