USPTO plans to extend "Green Technology Pilot Program"

The program is designed to promote the development
of green technologies. Participation was
previously limited to applications filed
before December 8, 2009. The USPTO is
expanding the eligibility for the pilot
program to include applications filed on
or after December 8, 2009. The program
is also being extended until December
31, 2011. These changes will permit
more applications to qualify for the
program, thereby allowing more
inventions related to green technologies
to be advanced out of turn for
examination and reviewed earlier.
Applicants may participate in the green
technology pilot program without
meeting the current requirements of the
accelerated examination program. The
accelerated examination program is
covered under OMB Control Number
0651–0031.
This pilot will support national and
international green technology
initiatives.

It’s official. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has extended the
accelerated patent review process for green technologies for an additional year to
December 31, 2011, reports CNET. The program was set to expire on Dec. 8, 2010.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is extending by one year its program that expedites review of applications for inventions intended to improve the environment and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.
The program, which was scheduled to expire Dec. 8, has granted 790 petitions for the faster review and issued 79 patents since the initiative began a year ago, the Alexandria, Virginia-based agency said in a statement today. The average time before the first action on a “green technology” application is 49 days, the patent office said. That compares with the typical two-year wait.

The program launched in Dec. 2009 and was to expire on Dec. 8th this year, but the USPTO on Wednesday announced an deadline extension until Dec. 31, 2011. So far, the USPTO had received 1,595 patent petitions and granted 790 of them under the Green Technology Pilot Program.
