Schatten summoned to Korea in Hwang-gate probe

The Koreans have requested Schatten come to Korea to answer inquiries about the fraud involving Woo Suk Hwang.

Although some people have suggested that the fraud happened through lack of sophisticated hierarchy in a less-developed nation (see AAAS spokesperson), I personally think the Koreans were pretty quick to get at the problem.

One theme I will develop later is that Hwang and many Koreans probably viewed SCNT (and what it meant to Korea) in a way differently than Americans viewed it. This difference in view may be related to the difference in the view of the poplar tree in the ugly 1976 incident leading to the death of Captain Bonifas.
