Yahoo deals with Forgent
Under the deal, Yahoo will pay Forgent royalties and be dismissed from the pending patent litigation taking place in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California concerning US Patent No. 4,698,672.
The patent has brought Forgent over $100 million in royalties. If successful in the suit, the patent could be worth close to $1 billion.
Forgent CFO Jay Peterson: "The patent, in some respects, is a lottery ticket. If you told me five years ago that you have the patent for JPEG, I wouldn't have believed it."
The Forgent patent is specifically mentioned in the recent article by Lemley et al., in unfavorable terms.
