Google patent apps for targeting, personalization, and profiling

US application 10/813925, entitled Determining ad targeting information and/or ad creative information using past search queries
and filed March 31, 2004, was published on October 6, 2005 [20050222901].

The assignee is Google but the law firm is STRAUB & POKOTYLO of Tinton Falls, NJ.

The first claim states:

A method comprising: a) accepting a document identifier; b) using the accepted document identifier to obtain at least one of (A) one or more terms and (B) one or more phrases; and c) providing the obtained at least one of (A) one or more terms and (B) one or more phrases as ad information for an ad, wherein the ad has a landing page document, and wherein the landing page document corresponds to a document identified by the document identifier.

The summary of the invention states:

The present invention may be used to determine ad targeting keywords for an advertiser. The present invention may do so by storing selected document information to query information associations, aggregating such associations, and, for an ad associated with a selected document, providing popular terms and/or phrases (hereafter referred to as "terms/phrases") also associated with the selected document as ad targeting keywords for the ad.

Another published application is Results based personalization of advertisements in a search engine [20050222989].

The first claim states:

A computer implemented method for providing personalized advertisements in an online search engine, the method comprising: selecting a set of documents responsive to a user query and a user profile containing user interest information; and selecting an advertisement in response to a search profile derived from the set of documents.
