Google takes a pass on Nortel patents: Larry Page and Sergey Brin got the pleasure of proving that they still remember their number theory.

Philip Elmer-DeWitt concluded a post titled Apple takes the patent wars seriously. Google not so much with the text:

Larry Page and Sergey Brin got the pleasure of proving that they still remember their number theory.

because some of Google's bids related to things like Brun's constant (1.902160540...), the Meissel-Mertens constant (0.2614972128...) and pi (3.14159...).

Although the bidding was about patents, Elmer-Dewitt made a copyright reference:

But it was Google's Android partners -- the HTCs, Motorolas and Samsungs of the world -- that were getting sued for making smartphones that look and feel suspiciously like the iPhone.

Note Apple asked ND CA in San Jose on 1 July 2011 to issue a preliminary injunction that would prevent Samsung from infringing three Apple design patents, and one utility patent.

If granted, the preliminary injunction would apply to Samsung products including the Galaxy S 4G smartphone and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet computer.
